STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

In our school we have a Student Representative Council (SRC). Each
class has two SRC members. We meet every week as a Council. During
the meetings we discuss and act upon issues brought from each class
and other issues that involve the whole school and wider community.
How our SRC works:

Peer Mediators
Peer mediators are trained to help other students to resolve problems
in the yard. They help children to find their own solution to their
problems and to reach an agreement.

A week in the life of a peer mediator at Gilles Street Primary School
It is Monday morning, just before recess,
and we are traveling around the school telling all the classes our
names and when we will be mediating.
We also tell students what we can’t handle around the schoolyard
and tell them that if they pick up rubbish they will get a sticker.
We have just got time to go back to class and get our recess food.
Then it’s time to start mediating!
At recess and lunchtime we help out around the schoolyard. To make
sure we are noticed we have fluro green clipboards and we wear fluro
green bumbags and jackets. We have four peer mediators working per
week so we do different breaks each day.
After the week has gone we give back our accessories and that is that
for that current term.
It is good to help the school in any way possible.
Student Induction Buddies (SIBS)
Year 6/7 class is part of a program called SIBS. We work with children
in all classes that are new to our school to make them feel comfortable
and welcome. We have been allocated a group of children from each
class and we show them around the school. Also we ask them if they
are having any problems and answer any questions they may have. We
act like a caring big brother or sister. Our class feels confident
that we can make a positive difference to our school. We look forward
to working with our SIBS.

Community Service
As part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program students
in Years 6 and 7 perform community service for others. Younger students
also contribute in many ways.
