GARAGE SALE & FETE | Top
The Garage Sale and fete was a huge success and a wonderful community
event. This year the majority of classes were involved in running
stalls or activities which resulted in a real community atmosphere on
the day. The fundraising committee and staff worked tirelessly to
organise the event and the overall money raised was fantastic. We
raised $ 3,700 from the fete, $1,300 from the raffle and $250 for J
Rock. Rotary raised $2,700 from the garage sale. The money raised will
go towards our new shade covers over the playground. We look forward to
this becoming an annual event for the school.
NUMERACY WEEK
| Top
During Numeracy Week students from Reception to Year 7 participated in
a whole school numeracy activity. Year 6 & 7 students
calculated
how much space each student should have to play in the yard during
break times. Classes marked the space for each student using chalk and
children then drew anything to do with matematics in the space.
"Mathematics in the Environment" was the theme of a special display of
class work in the hall.

SPORTS DAY | Top
The atmosphere was wonderful and the hard work of the sports day
committee paid off with everyone having a very exciting day.
The Year 6/7 students developed, taught and lead the whole school in a
very active Health Hustle for our first event.
The team chants led by the House leaders followed and then the children
moved to the Parklands for the Tabloid Events.
It was pleasing to see the sportsmanship, teamwork, enthusiasm and
skill shown by the children during their events.
The Program Achieve keys of Getting Along, Organisation, Emotional
Resilience, Persistence and Confidence were seen in the positive
attitude of the children.
Before lunch “The Tug of War” was keenly contested
by the four House teams selected from the Upper Primary students.
We also had some very strong parents who enjoyed being part of their
own “Tug of War” event.
After lunch the children participated in the Whole School Relay which
was a fantastic spectacle accompanied by energetic music.
The Sprints for each year level completed the program. The final result
was very close and congratulations go to the winning team –
Blue.
It was great to see their team’s excitement when the result
was announced.
TRIPLE A
AWARD | Top
Congratulations to Mira Lisichin our Out of School Hours Care Director.
Mira recently won the prestigious Triple A Award for acknowledgement,
achievement and advocacy for Out of Hours School Care. It is wonderful
that Mira has received this external award for her tireless work and
commitment over many years. Well Done Mira.

INVESTIGATING IDENTITY AND POWER RELATIONS
| Top
Helen Grant has published a research project she conducted with a
colleague, Catherine Walsh, on the South Australian Literacy and
Numeracy web site. "Investigating Identity and Power Relations", which
was funded by The Spencer Foundation, Chicago , USA , explores theories
through units of work around critical literacy and multiliteracies.

BOOK WEEK | Top
The school celebrated Book Week with a special assembly run by the SRC.
As well as special performances the whole school read "Chatterbox",
voted our favourite Book Week title; and enjoyed a quiet reading time
together in "The Great Big Read In".

PREMIER'S
READING CHALLENGE | Top
Many
children have successfully completed this years Premier's Reading
Challenge by reading 12 or more books. A picture gallery of those who
took the challenge is in the library.
COME OUT | Top
Despite the weather our launch of the Come Out celebrations and
playground opening were an outstanding success.
The theme of Universal Values and the Universal Story resulted in the
children being involved in designing banners throughout last term.
During the opening ceremony 8 large banners reproduced by Christine
Lawrence were paraded through the school. These banners will be on
display in the hall . Rainbow inspired flags with shared values written
on them were also paraded and will be flying over our playground for
the next few weeks.
The official ceremony started with the first performance of our Taiko
training group followed by the performing team. The Honourable Lord
Mayor , the Lord Mayor of Adelaide Michael Harbison then officially
opened the playground. Tony Possingham the Chairperson of the Gilles
Street School Council opened our Come Out celebrations.
Children were then treated to a wide variety of workshops and
performances which will continue for the next few weeks. A special
thank you to Christine Lawrence, Val Zogopoulos, Helen Grant, Tracey
Neale and John Elliot for working so hard to make the day
possible.

MEDIA STUDIES | Top
Students study a range of printed and visual texts as part of media
studies. Through printed mass media, claymation and film making
students explore issues in their school and their world. Film projects
have won Young Film-makers Awards and are available from the school at
a cost of $20 (inc GST).
Film titles include:
· Hidden Treasures of Adelaide
· Sudan
· Cooking Afghani Style
· About Being Me
Contact Helen Grant for further information.
SPINY LEAF INSECTS | Top
Spiny leaf insects are a very low maintenance and gentle creature,
making them an ideal choice for a classroom or home pet. Their
appearance, behaviour and relatively short life span offer an excellent
opportunity for studying camouflage and life cycles. Overseas visitors
to the school are especially impressed by the insects and take the
opportunity of a “photo shoot” to take home as a
momento. Many schools around the state have purchased our insects for
their classrooms.
Insects
are available for sale from the school. Contact Alison Hicks in the
Library for further information.
